Jake Ellenberger Earns First UFC Submission Victory Over One-Time Contender

ufc 184

Carrying a three-fight losing streak into UFC 184, Jake Ellenberger knew he needed a victory.

He not only got that Saturday night, he did so in impressive fashion, submitting Josh Koscheck for his first Octagon submission victory.

“(Winning) has never felt so good,” he said, crediting Mark Munoz with showing him the finishing hold.

Ellenberger (30-9) had lost to Kelvin Gastelum, UFC champion Robbie Lawler and title contender Rory MacDonald since a 2013 knockout of Nate Marquardt. His last submission win came in 2006 when he locked up an armbar.

“Josh hits hard and is always dangerous,” Ellenberger said. “I had to be smart and intelligent. He is a guy I look up to.”

The submission loss was the first for Koscheck, a former title contender, since 2005. Koscheck (17-9) has now lost four in a row, including finishes vs. Tyron Woodley, Lawler and a decision defeat to former champion Johny Hendricks.
