Welcome to Fightline.com's live, round-by-round coverage of Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields. Tonight's fight card comes to us live from the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, MO.Now, on to the action! Preliminary Card Pat Benson defeated Dave Cochran via submission (armbar) at 2:18 of Round 1. Lucas Lopes defeated Scott Ventimiglia via DQ (illegal knee) at 3:26 of Round 1. Tyron Woodley defeated Salvoder Woods by submission (choke) at 4:20 of Round 1. Booker DeRousse defeated James Wade via TKO (strikes) at 4:06 of Round 1. Mike Kyle defeated Rafael Cavalcante via TKO (strikes) at 4:05 of Round 2. Jesse Finney defeated Josh Bumgarner via submission (keylock) at 1:55 of Round 1. Main Card Kevin Randleman vs. Mike Whitehead Round 1: Whitehead started with some inside leg kicks early. Randleman was able to take Whitehead down, but Whitehead was able to power back to his feet. Whitehead was able to take Randleman down, but they were back to their feet shortly after. Whitehead scored another takedown but Randleman reversed and they were back on their feet. Whitehead scored yet another takedown and Randleman seems to be gassing. Whitehead landed some good body shots but Randleman was able to reverse yet again and get to his feet. Whitehead landed some jabs while on their feet and went for another takedown, which he was able to get. He stayed on top of Randleman as the round came to an end. FightLine.com scores this round 10-9 for Whitehead. Round 2: Whitehead landed a right hook early. Whithead got a takedown again and got side control. Whitehead controlled Randleman and the crowd started to boo a little, probably spoiled from all the stoppages in the preliminary bouts. Whitehead got the full mount and tried for some ground and pound, but Randleman was able to wiggle out and get back to his feet and nail Whitehead with a left hook. The rest of the round remained standing with little damage done. Another 10-9 round for Whitehead. Round 3: Randleman landed a big overhand right which rocked Whitehead, and Whitehead responded with a right of his own. Randleman nailed Whitehead with a massive right that knocked Whitehead and started wailing away on him and went to the ground, but Whitehead was able to recover. It almost looked over, but Whitehead recovered, Randleman looked like he might have missed an opportunity to finish whitehead. Randleman landed some straight left jabs before Whitehead took Randleman down. Whitehead just laid on Randleman, but Randleman was able to power back up with 40 seconds left in the round. Whitehead nailed Randleman with a right hook, but Randleman stayed standing. They tried to trade blows as the round came to a close. 10-9 Randleman. Winner via unanimous decision (all judges scored it 29-28): Mike Whitehead. Pat Militech, Josh Thomson, Tim Sylvia, Gilbert Melendez, Josh Barnett and Fedor Emelianenko were all shown at cageside. Phil Baroni vs. Joe Riggs Both fighters elected not to touch gloves before the fight. From the comments both men have made here on FightLine.com this past week, I'm not surprised. Round 1: Riggs took Baroni down early and got Baroni's back. He attempted a rear-naked choke, but Baroni was able to squirm out. Riggs maintained control on top, landing shots and moving in and out of side control. Baroni briefly got up to his feet, only to be taken back down. Baroni was finally able to get on top and land some punches to the body with less than two minutes left. With less than a minute, referee John McCarthy stood them up, but Riggs quickly went for a take down. Baroni was able to get the better on the ground and landed some shots to finish the round. 10 - 9 Riggs. Round 2: Both men exchanged early. Baroni got a takedown, but they were quickly back to their feet and Riggs got the better of the stand up. Baroni looks tired. Riggs nailed Baroni with a big knee and a straight punch. Both men went for a single leg, but both of their attempts were stuffed. They sprawled to the mat, with Riggs pulling Baroni into his guard. Riggs went for the traingle and Baroni was able to pull his head out and get out with less than a minute left. Baroni landed some more shots as the round came to a close. Another 10-9 round for Riggs. Round 3: Both fighters touched gloves to start the round. Riggs nailed Baroni with a flying knee and kicks and rocked him again. Riggs nailed another flying right knee. Riggs continued to rock Baroni with jabs and kicks. Baroni is looking exhausted now. Riggs hit another knee, followed by a left hand. Baroni went for a kick, and Riggs told Baroni to bring it. Riggs is dominating this round with a minute left. Riggs kept nailing Baroni with knees, punches and elbows but Baroni stayed standing, showing his great chin. Baroni swung wildly and was taken down as the round came to a close. 10-9 round for Riggs. Winner via unanimous decision (scores of 30-27): Joe Riggs After the fight, Riggs said that he had broken both of his hands and that he had a bad flu. He then went on to say that he wants Jake Shields next, but wouldn't disrespect him and just said that he was a great fighter. Gina Carano vs. Cyborg and Josh Thomson vs. Gilbert Melendez were officially announced for the Strikeforce event on August 15th. Josh Thomson and Gilbert Melendez were interviewed about their upcoming fight. Nick Diaz vs. Scott Smith Round 1: Smith started the round swinging wildly. Diaz stuck his chin out and challenged Smith to hit him. Diaz keeps peppering Smith with those short jabs. Diaz has Smith hurt with his punches. At the half-way point of the round, both guys stayed standing with Diaz getting the better of the stand up. Diaz mocked Smith and got hit with a right for it. Smith was able to take Diaz down with a minute left in the round, but Diaz was right back up and they went right back to exchanging. Smith finished strong, swinging wildly and taking Diaz down to end the round. Great first round. 10-9 for Diaz. Round 2: Smith came in with his power punches while Diaz kept throwing jab after jab. The frenetic pace set in round 1 continues in this one. Diaz keeps nailing combinations on Smith, which are taking their toll. Smith was able to land right hands in between taking the combinations from Diaz. Diaz has already landed over a hundred punches in this round. Diaz landed some head kicks with less than 90 seconds left. Diaz landed a couple of shots and Smith went down as the round came to a close. Smith may be done. Another great round! Diaz landed 125 of 221 punches in that round. Unreal! 10-9 for Diaz. Round 3: Smith, who almost looked done at the end of round 2, came out swinging. Diaz nailed Smith with more shots and got the fight to the ground. He got Smith's back and attempted a bar-arm choke. He secured it in and was able to get the win. Great fight. Winner via submission (bar-arm choke) at 1:41 of Round 3: Nick Diaz The Compustrike stats show that Diaz landed 207 of 397 strikes. Insane! After the fight, Diaz said that Smith's training partners can't be trusted and that he should come and train with Diaz's camp. Fedor Emelianenko was shown at cageside again, and they plugged his fight with Josh Barnett at Affliction: Trilogy. Andrei Arlovski vs. Brett Rogers Michael Moore (Freddie Roach's assistant, not the filmmaker) accompanied Arlovski to the ring. The fight was announced as being brought by Affliction, and they announced the top fights for Affliction: Trilogy during the ring introductions. Round 1: Rogers came straight at Arlovski and nailed him with punches and immediately knocked him out! Brett Rogers is for real! Some may think it was an early stoppage, but Arlovski was out before he hit the ground. Winner via KO (strikes) at 0:22 of Round 1: Brett Rogers After the fight, Rogers thanked Arlovski for taking the fight but said that he didn't think that Arlovski was hungry. He said he and his wife will get a new house with the victory. He said he wants the title next! Fedor Emelianenko and Josh Barnett were interviewed at cageside about their upcoming fight at Affliction: Trilogy. Robbie Lawler vs. Jake Shields Round 1: Lawler was able to avoid a takedown early. Shields landed a couple of kicks and was able to secure a guillotine on Lawler and has it deep. Lawler got up but they went back to the ground and Lawler tapped. Winner via submission (guillotine) at 2:02 of Round 1: Jake Shields After the fight, Shields thanks Lawler and said that he was a great fighter. He said he's ready for anyone next and he wants the title. He then threw a challenge out to Cung Le. Lawler said he's going back to the drawing board, but he will be back.
