Lawler quickly heeded the advise of his corner and lived up to his nickname by "ruthlessly" dominating Rua with a flurry of strikes. The onslaught ended with a defenseless, essentially motionless Rua curled on the canvas taking heavy punishment from Lawler on the top. The referee stepped in with just under 3:00 left in the round awarding Lawler a TKO.

Matt Hughes, who trains with Lawler, and was working his corner for the fight, rushed into the ring and gave referee Yamamoto an earful about what he saw as a late stoppage. Hughes said later that he felt Rua took three or four unnecessary shots.
