Herb Dean has been called one of the better MMA referees out there and has seen his number of high level fights. The career defining moment dates back to Frank Mir vs. heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia.
“I think the fight that most people comment on is the Tim Sylvia against Frank Mir, where Mir broke Sylvia’s arm,” said Dean to TATAME. “This fight was very important for my career.”
In that UFC 48 outing, Mir had Sylvia in an armbar as the champ tried to lift the challenger. Sylvia’s radius bone snapped 50 seconds into round one and Dean stopped the fight. Post-fight, Sylvia was vocal against the stoppage, but later said Dean made the right call.
Before being a referee, Dean had a short MMA run where he went 2-3. He credits being a fighter as a good transition into refereeing.
