UFC welterweight Gunnar Nelson escaped a life-threatening car accident in Iceland over the weekend. The 25-year-old only left with 11 stitches, but it could have been worse.
Nelson was one of four passengers in a pickup car which drove off the road and towards a freezing river. The following e-mail was sent to MMA Fighting from Harldur Nelson, the father of the UFC fighter.
“If the car had gone few feet further into the river it would have hit deep waters and the current would have taken it. So they were very lucky. Also, if they had gone of roads few meters before or later it would have been much worse and they would also have gone in the river.”

Nelson’s father continued that his son is looking for an early 2014 UFC return. He’s 2-0 for the UFC and has just resumed training after an MCL injury.
