UFC 165 witnessed light heavyweight champion Jon Jones be pushed by Alexander Gustafsson. It was the toughest challenge to date for the champ and his trainer Greg Jackson thinks “Bones” proved he was the better person inside the Octagon.
“For me, it was his best performance because you got to see that he’s got a great jaw on him,” said Jackson on Sherdog Radio. “You got to see that he’s just tough. He’s just super tough. He just keeps getting in there and keeps pushing and keeps fighting. As much as I was impressed with Alex, I was even more impressed with Jon because he just kept coming and just kept coming and was ultimately able to win it.”
The decision win for Jones was not universally accepted and some hoped for a rematch to remove any doubt. Instead, the UFC will move ahead and are planning Jones vs. Glover Teixeira in 2014. Gustafsson’s return hasn’t been announced.
Jackson was not allowed in the corner of Jones at UFC 165, as only three people were permitted. He settled for watching the fight backstage.
