Glover Teixeira’s position as the next challenger to the UFC light heavyweight title is already coming into question even before the belt can be defended again.
Following his recent win over Ryan Bader, Teixeira was labelled the No. 1 contender to the belt that will be defended by Jon Jones this weekend against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165.
However, late last week, UFC president Dana White backtracked a bit on those claims – the same ones he himself made.
During his Google Hangout, White was asked if Daniel Cormier could become the No. 1 challenger to the belt with a win over Roy Nelson in October. White responded, “Yeah, probably, yep,” to the question.
So, Teixeira has gone from being the confirmed contender by White and Joe Silva to possibly being passed by Cormier – who would be making his light heavyweight debut after competing as a heavyweight his entire career – in just a matter of days.
