Giva Santana Retires Following Bellator 98 Loss

Bellator 98 served as the final time fans will see middleweight Giva Santana fight. The 41-year-old made the retirement announcement after being stopped in the second round by Jason Butcher. They were part of the opening round fights for the Season 9 middleweight tournament.

Butcher landed an uppercut then pounced with several more blows before the referee had seen enough. The win puts Butcher in the semifinals.

Santana joined the sport in 2005 and has made appearances for Elite XC and M-1. He was 2-2 for Bellator and was unsuccessful in two tournament bids.

At 18-3 overall, Santana took 16 wins by submission with 13 coming via armbar.
