Gina Carano Deserves UFC Title Shot, Ronda Rousey Says Fight “Would Be Best For Women’s MMA”

UFC female bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey is on board with fighting Gina Carano. Now, things just have to get settled in the negotiating room.

Rousey stopped by a media event in Los Angeles to see UFC president Dana White on Wednesday, and discussed the possibility of facing Carano.

“I think it would be the best thing for women’s MMA,” Rousey said (thanks to for the quotes). “I think it would be the highest profile fight that could be done. I think it would make more sense to go straight to a title fight (for Carano).”

Carano has not competed since 2009, when she lost to Cris “Cyborg” Justino in Strikeforce. She left MMA and has been continuing her acting career, something Rousey is also dabbling in.

“I don’t think it would make sense for her to come back and fight somebody else and take the risk of maybe losing and not being able to capitalize on the fight between me and her,” Rousey said. “She’s one of the pioneers of the sport. She’s the reason I fight at all.”

Rousey is coming off a victory over Sara McMann. She also defended her belt successfully last year against Miesha Tate.

White and Carano were scheduled to meet Wednesday night to discuss a possible return. She has fights remaining on her contract dating back to Strikeforce.

“She’s going to come back when she wants to sign,” White said. “She’s not coming back just because. She’s coming back because she wants the title.”
