Gilbert Burns Digs Deep, Gains Victory At UFC Fight Night 62

For the better part of two rounds, Alex Oliveira appeared to have the unbeaten Gilbert Burns figured out.

With a rush of adrenaline – and motivation from his corner between rounds – Burns fired out after Oliveira, worked him on the ground and secured a come-from-behind third round submission victory at UFC Fight Night 62.

Burns (10-0) earned his third Octagon victory and second straight via armbar. This one, though, tested his resolve.

“(Henri Hooft) told me not to give up,” Burns said. “It was a tough technical fight, but when the technical part doesn’t work, you have to go with your heart.”

The former world jiu-jitsu champion was busted up by the striking of Oliveira, as his left eye nearly swelled shut. He also had blood coming from his nose after the offensive output by the underdog.

“I knew there was a little time left, so I had to go for it,” said Burns, who also had Vitor Belfort in his corner. “I had to finish the fight.”

Oliveira is now 10-2 in his career. He stepped in as a replacement for Josh Thomson for the fight.
