If you are into MMA – which, if you are hanging around on FightLine this lovely Monday morning you likely are – this upcoming weekend is going to be a treat for you.
Three big-time events over three days will take place, and you don’t even have to worry about recording one to watch the other.
Unlike in 2014 when UFC, Bellator MMA and World Series of Fighting all tried to go head-to-head, the three have decided to split January 16-18 equally.
Bellator 132: Pitbull vs. Straus takes place Friday night on Spike TV, followed by Saturday’s WSOF: Shields vs. Foster event on NBC Sports Network. We’ll conclude the MMA-filled weekend with UFC Fight Night: McGregor vs. Siver on FOX Sports 1 Sunday.
Quite the treat for all, as the cards boast some intriguing bouts and big-time names.
Here’s a look at what’s in store for each night:
The 2015 debut of Bellator will feature a featherweight championship match, as Patricio “Pitbull” Freire defends vs. former titleholder Daniel Straus.
Freire is on a five-fight win streak that includes a September decision win over Pat Curran to claim the title. He’s also downed Jared Downing, Diego Nunes, Fabricio Guerreiro and Justin Wilcox since a 2013 loss to Curran, and owns a 2011 decision win over Straus.
Straus is 7-1 since that defeat to Freire, including a 2013 win over Curran to claim the title. Following a loss to Curran last year, he rebounded with a win over Wilcox to secure another shot at the gold.
The card will also feature Bubba Jenkins, a highly-touted ex-NCAA wrestling champion, welcoming former WSOF champ Georgi Karakhanyan to Bellator. Veterans Virgil Zwicker and Houston Alexander also meet on the main card.
