Gegard Mousasi doesn’t believe he needs to take chances to win fights.
The former Strikeforce champion did that Saturday at UFC Fight Night 84, earning a decision over Thales Leites in the co-main event.
“I don’t need to take chances,” Mousasi said. “If I don’t take chances, nobody can beat me. I am a Top-5 fighter.”
Mousasi (37-6-2) avoided suffering his first career losing streak, improving to 5-3 with the UFC. He suffered a stunning second round loss to Uriah Hall last September.
“I was up (two rounds), so why take a chance in the last 30 seconds?” Mousasi said.
The crowd was upset by the lack of offense from “The Dreamcatcher,” but he now has bested former contenders Leites and Dan Henderson, along with UFC wins vs. Costas Philippou and Ilir Latifi.
Mousasi out-struck Leites almost 4-to-1 and stuffed all 12 takedown attempts thrown at him.
