Gegard Mousasi Back In Line Towards UFC Middleweight Title Fight

Following a first round finish of Dan Henderson, former Strikeforce champion Gegard Mousasi believes he is back in the thick of the race.

Mousasi improved to 36-5-2 in his career, including 3-2 with the UFC, after the quick win in Sweden. While his losses are to a pair of top contenders in Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Lyoto Machida, he still believes a shot at the belt is close.

“For me, I just have to do my job,” he said, during the post-fight show on FOX Sports 2. “I’m back in the line for the title shot, but there are so many guys ahead of me. It’s one of the toughest divisions in the UFC.”

The veteran was coming off a submission defeat to Souza last September, and realized time away from training and fighting was needed after competing three times in 2014.

“I took the time off and the rest was good,” he said. “I needed to prove myself (after the Souza loss).

“I was in very good shape coming in. I came to fight and it shows. I wanted to bang with Henderson and once I landed the shot, I waited for a second because I thought he was out, but it wasn’t stopped and I landed two more punches, then it was stopped.”
