Frank Mir is a veteran of the sport.
That’s why the former UFC heavyweight champion arrived in Australia a week ago ahead of his Saturday night UFC Fight Night 85 meeting with Mark Hunt.
“That’s why I left (Las ) Vegas last Thursday,” said Mir, during an interview on UFC Tonight. “It gives me lots of time to get adjusted. The plane trip was 14 hours. I needed time to get the kinks out of me and my body. I’m ready now.”
Mir (18-10) had his two-fight win streak snapped this past September at the hands of Andrei Arlovski. Overall, he is just 2-5 over his last seven, but did win three in a row prior.
“The reason why I was so sluggish against Arlovski was I had too long a training camp. For (Todd) Duffee, it was 12 weeks of training camp. But for Arlovski, it was longer and I had hard time being explosive,” he said. “The longer camp took away that pop I had in my step. I trained properly and peaked at right time for this.”
The 36-year-old also believes the extra time off – he was scheduled to fight in December – will help “recharge the batteries.”
