Former Strikeforce Champ Tarec Saffiedine Returns

The last time we saw former Strikeforce champion Tarec Saffiedine, he was on the wrong end of a loss to Rory MacDonald.

That was back in 2014, and the 29-year-old from Belgium has been forced to recover away from the Octagon.

Saffiedine returned Saturday night, earning himself a much-needed win vs. Jake Ellenberger in the UFC on FOX 18 prelim feature attraction. The win improved his UFC record to 2-1 overall and his record to 6-1 over his last seven.

“It’s good to be back after a year off,” Saffiedine said. “He was a tough opponent and I couldn’t be happier right now. He got me, but I was able to recover really good. It was a quick moment, but I was able to come back.”

After earning a decision vs. Nate Marquardt back in 2013, Saffiedine signed with the UFC and scored a decision over Hyun Gyu Lim to secure a contender match with MacDonald. He was stopped, though, in the third round vs. the Canadian.

“I didn’t feel too much ring rust. I train hard,” he said. “I was basically sleeping, eating and training in the gym. I had to get mentally stronger, it was tough.”
