Rick Story returned to the Octagon for the first time in 603 days and picked up his 12th victory there Sunday night at UFC Fight Night 88, besting Tarec Saffiedine via decision.
Story (19-8) picked up a victory over Gunnar Nelson in 2014 despite suffering a fracture in his left tibia during the second round of the contest. That injury, along with other issues and a second injury in 2015, kept him on the sidelines until this past weekend.
“I had a couple of injuries I had to recover from,” Story said. “I had to train smart (when I came back) and just put on a show.”
Since a 2014 split decision loss to Kelvin Gastelum, Story has now won three straight overall and is 5-2 over his last seven. He also holds a win over former UFC champion Johny Hendricks to his credit.
“My cardio feels great,” he said. “I was working for the takedown, but (Saffiedine) was tough.”
Saffiedine (16-5), a former Strikeforce champion, lost for the second time in his last three fights.
