UFC 156: Jose Aldo Vs. Frankie Edgar

Jose Aldo (c) vs. Frankie Edgar for the UFC featherweight championshipIt's time for the main event, as UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo (21-1) puts his title on the line against former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar (15-3-1). The referee will be Steve Mazzagatti.
Round 1: Edgar throws the first leg kick, connecting to Aldo's lead leg. Edgar moving quickly, but Aldo lands a kick and a jab. As he had in the promos, Edgar still has a pretty fresh looking cut above his right eye. That could come into play down the road in this match. Edgar comes running in and eats a right to the face. Quick left jab to the face lands by Aldo, as does another. Aldo appears to have his timing down just two minutes in, connecting with another pair of straight rights. Edgar's face already has some red color to it, as Aldo is teeing off wit his jab. A complete thud of a leg kick by Aldo to finish off a strong round for the champion.

Round 2: Left leg of Edgar beginning to swell from the kicks of Aldo, but he is still coming forward. Edgar throws a kick of his own, and looks for a quick takedown but is denied. Combo from Aldo off an exchange. Another takedown defended by Aldo with ease. Huge kick from Aldo nearly takes Edgar off his feet. And another to the same area of the lead leg drops him for a brief moment. A big welt on the leg of Edgar from the series of kicks, along with some swelling above his left eye. Flying knee from Aldo, and Edgar gets the clinch, but is unable to do any damage. Edgar with a strong takedown. Aldo's mouth is open and he is moving much slower, but still lands a stiff jab and throws a spinning kick to end the round.

Round 3: Aldo throws a kick, but this time Edgar catches it and briefly takes him to his back. Head kick thrown by Edgar misses, but he continues to push forward with his offense. Edgar is throwing three punches for every one by Aldo. Front kick lands by Aldo, and the nose is bleeding profusely. Kick to the body blocked by Aldo. Edgar trying to kick the knee area, landing a series of strikes. Edgar with a nice combo and follows it up with a kick, and is still coming at Aldo. Big right lands, as Aldo fends off a takedown attempt with ease.

Round 4: Edgar starting to do some damage to the lead leg of Aldo, landing a pair of nice shots to open the round. Aldo answers with a spinning back kick, but Edgar fires back with a right. Edgar's moving just as quickly as he was in the first round, while Aldo has slowed dramatically. Edgar fights hard for a takedown, but is denied, as he has been 6 of 7 times so far. Left hook from Edgar slips past, as does a quick little uppercut. Edgar drops levels and gets a big takedown, though Aldo springs to his feet. Edgar trying to knee the legs out from under the champion.

Round 5: Just unbelievable that Edgar is still bouncing around after 20 minutes and having his leg battered by Aldo. Edgar looking to push the tempo. Quick pair of jabs connect by Aldo, who fends off a takedown attempt. Spinning back kick by Edgar lands. Uppercut from Edgar slips through the defense, as does a combo kick-punch. Two minutes left, and Edgar lands a knee off the clinch, followed by a combo with 90 seconds remaining. Exchange and Aldo gets the best of it with a counter that stops Edgar. Edgar comes back with a combo of his own as we go under a minute. Aldo springs off the fence and lands a Superman punch to finish the round.
