Bellator's new championship rematch rule will allow Bjorn Rebney to decide if someone deserves a title rematch instead of having them reenter the next season's tournament. While this may be great news to some, since the rule isn't grandfathered into previous fights, the likes of Eddie Alvarez (24-3) would not be eligible for an immediate rematch."So a consideration of retroactive applicability to this hasn't been one we've really given any consideration to" said Rebney to MMA Weekly.
Alvarez was a former champion who is now a free agent. Bellator are waiting to see what other promotions offer before they decide if they're going to resign the fighter.
Rebney gave examples of a few upcoming fights that he sees having possible rematches. He said to be on the lookout for Rick Hawn (14-1) vs. Michael Chandler (10-0) and Patricio Freire vs. Pat Curran (17-4).
"I'm looking forward on all of those," said Rebney.
The new rule goes into effect when Bellator makes their Spike TV debut in January. They will be leaving MTV2 and heading to the former channel of the UFC.
