Starting in January, Bellator will have a new rule when it pertains to title fights. Bjorn Rebney has created a clause that allows him to have championship rematches when "called for.""Championship fights give us some of the greatest moments in MMA," wrote Rebney on the promotion's website. "And, rematches of incredible championship fights will give fans like us more of those electrifying moments while staying true to the world's best fighters having had to earn their way to those title shots."
Since the promotion started, the only way to have a title shot was to win that season's tournament. Each tournament consist of three rounds.
Due to the previous ruling, former tournament finalist Jay Hieron (23-6) and lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez (24-3) chose to not resign with Bellator. Hieron signed with the UFC and Alvarez is a free agent.
The new rule goes into effect when Bellator officially moves to Spike TV in January.
