It's been a difficult month for UFC middleweight, Chris Weidman. First his home was ravaged by Hurricane Sandy, and now, due to a torn labrum, he has to withdraw from fighting Tim Boetsch at UFC 155. Mark La Monica of Newsday first reported the news of the cancelled bout.MMA Fight Corner's Heidi Fang reached out to Weidman who confirmed the news that he does have a torn labrum that may require surgery. The injury was suffered in practice after Weidman fell wrong after a takedown. It could easily take a few months to recover from the injury. If surgery happens, perhaps even longer.
The news comes as a huge blow to Weidman who was making his case for a chance to fight for the title against middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva.
Weidman's Serra-Longo teammate, Costa Philippou, is expected replace him in the bout against Boetsch. The UFC confirmed that news via their official Twitter.
Philippou has won his last 4 fights in a row. He was set to face Nick Ring at UFC 154 until doctors called the fight off because of an illness Ring had suffered.
The UFC 155 card will take place on December 29th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It will be headlined by a rematch for the UFC Heavyweight Title between Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez.
