Georges St-Pierre Returns, Claims Undisputed UFC Welterweight Title
By Dana Becker | November 17, 2012
Georges St-Pierre didn't want to enter UFC 154: St-Pierre vs. Condit as the UFC welterweight champion, but he did want to leave the Bell Centre as that man. GSP did just that, scoring a decision victory over Carlos Condit. After being forced to the sidelines for almost two years due to knee issues, GSP believed Condit was the champion entering the fight. St-Pierre last fought in early 2011, and did say Octagon-rust was a factor.
"People talk about ring rust; I definitely know what is is now," said St-Pierre, who was a perfect 7-for-7 on his takedown attempts vs. Condit.
St-Pierre (23-2) scored his seventh successful title defense and improved to 10-2 in UFC championship fights. As for his surgically-repaired right knee, "Rush" said it held up quite fine.
"I would not have fought the fight (if the knee was healed up)," St-Pierre said. "I tested it in training and it was good for the fight."
As for a third-round head-kick that Condit landed, St-Pierre remarked that he did not see it, saying, "in the round before, I got punched in the eye and it was a little blurry. I never saw that kick. (Carlos) did a great job. What you don't see is what is dangerous."
