The upcoming meeting between Martin Kampmann (20-5) and Johny Hendricks (13-1) went from having the name of No. 1 contender fight to a regular contest. It was a decision made earlier in the month by Dana White. Kampmann hasn't thought about the call by the UFC president, but that may change soon."I try not to worry about it, but I definitely feel this fight should be for the number one contender spot," said Kampmann to Bleacher Report. "It's only really a problem after I beat Johny Hendricks and that is what I'm focused on."
Kampmann enters the fight 11-4 since joining the UFC in 2006. He is on a three fight win streak, earning Knockout of the Night honors for his June performance. Hendricks is 8-1 for the UFC. His only professional loss was the one he received in January 2010. He comes in on a four fight win streak, where two of those came via split decision.
If Kampmann is successful in the fight, then he will worry about who is the No. 1 contender in the welterweight division.
"After that I can start to worry about the other stuff because I'm not looking past him," said Kampmann. "Of course I'm planning on winning, but let me knock out Johny Hendricks, and then I'll start worrying about what comes next."
Kampmann vs. Hendricks takes place this Saturday in the co-main event of UFC 154. The main event will see the UFC return of the welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre (22-2).
