Sean Sherk Not Rushing A Return To The Octagon

Former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk hasn't been in the spotlight lately, but that doesn't mean he has retired from MMA. Sherk, who last fought in 2010 when he defeated Evan Dunham, is hoping to get back to 100-percent without having any kind of surgery.

Since 2008, Sherk (36-4-1) has fought just four times, going 2-2. His losses have come at the hands of Frankie Edgar and BJ Penn - both former champions in the division.

"I've just been injured. I've got some injuries that need surgery, and I really don't want to have surgery," said Sherk, during a recent appearance on MMAWeekly Radio. "I don't like it. I don't like the down time. I'm trying to get myself healthy without having any kind of surgery."

Sherk said that he remains in contact with UFC president Dana White and UFC matchmaker Joe Silva, adding, "I've got two fights left under my contract with the UFC still, and I wouldn't fight anywhere else anyways."

Sherk won the UFC lightweight title in 2006, defeating Kenny Florian in a battle for the vacant crown. He defended it successfully vs. Hermes Franca, but was stripped of the championship following a failed post-fight drug test in 2007.
