'Minotauro' Nogueira Returns, Submits Dave Herman
By Dana Becker | October 13, 2012
Former PRIDE and interim UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira had one mission Saturday night: to stop Dave Herman. Nogueira did that, submitting Herman in the co-main event of UFC 153: Silva vs. Bonnar.Nogueira, who was returning for the first time since a submission loss to Frank Mir in 2011 that resulted in a broken arm, locked in an armbar on Herman. During pre-fight interviews, Herman had said Brazilian jiu-jitsu didn't work, much to the amusement of "Minotauro."
"I feel so happy," Nogueira said. "This man said jiu-jitsu doesn't work. Jiu-jitsu is a Brazilian art."
Nogueira added that he believes Herman practices Brazilian jiu-jitsu because "he knows how to defend himself." The submission victory was the first for "Big Nog" since 2008.
After defeating Brendan Schaub in his Brazilian debut in 2011, Nogueira was stopped by Mir. Now, he is 5-3 in the UFC and 34-7-1 overall.
Herman falls to 21-5 and 1-3 with the UFC.
