Nick Diaz Suspended Until NSAC Disciplinary Hearing
By Mark Wayne | February 22, 2012
Nick Diaz has had his license temporarily suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for testing positive for marijuana following his UFC 143 fight with Carlos ConditNevada State Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer filed an official complaint for license suspension against Nick Diaz in regards to the test and the NSAC authorized the complaint. Diaz is now suspended until he appears in front of the NSAC at a currently-unscheduled date to receive his full punishment.
It is expected that Diaz will be able to file a therapeutic use exemption for marijuana since he is legally permitted to use marijuana for medicinal purposes in the state of California, a similar process to fighter's clearing testosterone replacement therapy. To date, there has never been a fighter to apply for a therapeutic use exemption for marijuana in Nevada, but it has been assured by the NSAC that the case will be treated like any other TUE requests for banned substances.
It was revealed that Diaz tested positive for marijuana shortly after he and Condit contested the UFC interim welterweight title earlier this month at UFC 143 in a fight that saw Diaz lose a controversial decision.
This is the second time that Diaz has tested positive for marijuana in Nevada, having registered for the drug following his 2007 submission victory over Takanori Gomi at Pride 33.
