Carlos Condit won the UFC interim welterweight title when he defeated Nick Diaz at UFC 143 and there's been much speculation since over what he'll do with the belt.Holding onto the strap until true champion Georges St-Pierre returns from rehabbing his injured knee guarantees The Natural Born Killer a shot at the king, though it comes at the price of a layoff equal to however long it takes St-Pierre to recover, which looks to be until fall. Defending the belt in the meantime would mean risking that opportunity, but staying active.
Speaking with MMAJunkie recently, Condit asserted that the actual length -- when it can be more accurately determined -- of St-Pierre's layoff will be greatly informing his decision to either sit on the belt or put it on the line.
"I would prefer to be able to fully gauge Georges St-Pierre's recovery time before I make any decisions on my next fight," he said.
On a recent episode of UFC: Ultimate Insider, St-Pierre revealed that his recovery is coming along nicely and that he's actually further along at this point than he was projected to be.
"I feel very good. I'm ahead of schedule," he said. "I feel sometimes I want to do a little bit more but even though I feel good my graft is not fused properly, one hundred percent. I need to remain calm. The danger with a lot of athletes is to push through the pain and try to go too fast. If I do so, it might loose up the graft and I might have to start the whole process again and I don't want to do that."
Condit last appeared in action at UFC 143 earlier this month, taking a controversial decision over Nick Diaz. GSP fought most recently in April of last year, defeating Jake Shields by decision.
