Lorenzo Fertitta Says UFC Planning Cain Velasquez-Frank Mir, Tito Ortiz-Forrest Griffin III
By Dana Becker | February 10, 2012
On his official Twitter account, UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta announced plans for two upcoming matches in 2012. Fertitta said Cain Velasquez-Frank Mir at heavyweight, and Tito Ortiz-Forrest Griffin III at light heavyweight, are in the works. Fertitta did not disclose any possible dates for either bout. Fertitta held a discussion with MMA fans throughout the night, talking about possible fights, the Nick Diaz situation and the UFC in general.
Velasquez (9-1) has not competed since dropping the UFC heavyweight title to Junior dos Santos last November. The loss was the first of the career for Velasquez, a former Arizona State University wrestling standout.
Mir (16-5) has won his last three fights, including a submission victory over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira last December. Mir is also a former titleholder in the heavyweight division.
Ortiz and Griffin have been talking back-and-forth about meeting this summer in what would be the retirement fight for Ortiz. In the first meeting, Ortiz picked up the win, while Griffin scored a decision in the second meet.
