It had been said before, but just so everyone's clear, UFC president Dana White verified during last night's episode of UFC Tonight on Fuel TV (via MMAWeekly) that the impending UFC on Fox 2 main and co-main events will determine the next contenders to the UFC middleweight and light heavyweight crowns. At 185lbs. and in the co-main event, Chael Sonnen will be taking on Michael Bisping in a match shuffled together at the last minute when Sonnen's original opponent, Mark Muñoz, was injured and forced out of their fight. That bout was being billed as one for title contention and still is now, with Bisping inheriting what was the possible title shot by stepping up to face the number one contender in Sonnen.
Though Sonnen has expressed misgivings that a rematch with middleweight champion Anderson Silva will ever come together, White assured that, should he defeat Bisping he will most definitely be squaring off with The Spider this summer.
"I 100-percent, right here, right now, guarantee you that if Chael Sonnen wins his fight, that Anderson Silva will fight Chael Sonnen this summer," White said. "It will probably take place in Brazil."
In the night's main event, top light heavies Rashad Evans and Phil Davis will also do battle with title contention on the line; however, in this case, that opportunity only extends to Evans. With veteran Dan Henderson waiting in the wings, Phil Davis will find himself second in line for a title shot even if he does beat Evans.
"If Rashad Evans wins, and if he doesn't get injured, he will fight Jon Jones," said White. "He's the guy who gets the shot. He's been waiting a long time, and he's the one who deserves it. Should Rashad get hurt, then Dan Henderson will fight next."
UFC on Fox 2: Evans vs. Davis goes down this Saturday from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. FightLine will be back with live, ongoing coverage of the event.
