Many have called 2011 the year of Jon Jones, as "Bones" ran through Ryan Bader, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Lyoto Machida to earn, secure and defend the UFC light heavyweight championship. So, what could Jones possibly do for an encore in 2012? Let the champ tell you for himself.
"I've been thinking recently about trying to compete four times in the year again," said Jones, during a recent interview with ESPN.com. "I grew so much as a person that by doing that again in 2012 will just make me a better athlete."
"Bones" was set to take a few months off at the start of the year to get his body back in shape, but he is beginning to reconsider that decision, saying he might be back fighting in a couple of months.
Regardless of what Jones has planned, his likely first title defense of 2012 may be against long-time nemesis Rashad Evans. "Suga" has a fight with Phil Davis set for UFC on Fox 2 at the end of the month, and a win would set up a Jones-Evans bout. The two have missed squaring off due to injuries suffered by both men last year.
As far as Jones is concerned, it doesn't seem to matter who he faces, as the end result for him is the same, saying, "My goal is to finish every fight in 2012. If I do that, a lot of other things will fall into place naturally. I want to finish every opponent."
