Lesnar's Camp Had Issues With Overeem Training At Xtreme Couture
By Mark Wayne | December 29, 2011
To prepare for his blockbuster fight with Brock Lesnar tomorrow night, Alistair Overeem decided to move his camp from its longtime station in Holland to the United States. After touring several facilities, The Reem finally settled on Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas. Some wondered whether that would cause any friction between gym owner Randy Couture and the Lesnar team, seeing as how The Natural had been an integral part of Lesnar's training in the past. However, those parties involved, Lesnar included, denied that there were any issues with Overeem training at Xtreme Couture. After all, the now-retired Couture would be away from the gym for the entirety of Overeem's training filming movies.
So, when Overeem uprooted his camp midway through preparing for Lesnar to go back to Holland and aid his ailing mother, few questions were asked. Xtreme Couture trainer Gil Martinez recently told FightLine though, that there's more to the story.
"There were some issues with Alistair training at Xtreme Couture because Randy, after he fought Brock, trained with him and signed a disclosure with them," Martinez revealed. "So even though Randy isn't at the gym, Brock's people made it an issue so Overeem ended up not finishing his training here."
How Overeem will fare against Lesnar after having to cobble together a training camp when and where he could is just one of the many questions surrounding both men heading into their UFC 141 main event battle. UFC 141 goes down tomorrow night from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and, as always, FightLine will be back on the night with live, ongoing coverage of the event.
