St-Pierre Injured, Carlos Condit Vs. Nick Diaz At UFC 143
By Mark Wayne | December 07, 2011
UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre has been forced out of a planned title defense for the second time in the last four months, as the UFC has revealed that the French-Canadian has blown out his ACL and will be unable to face Nick Diaz this February as planned.GSP was on deck to face Carlos Condit - originally Nick Diaz, until Diaz shirked his media duties - at UFC 137 this past September, but was forced out of that fight with a knee injury. The UFC eventually cancelled that bout altogether in favor of GSP vs. Diaz, after the fiery Stocktonian beat down BJ Penn and aggressively called out the champ.
St-Pierre is expected to face a ten-month layoff and in the meantime, Nick Diaz will be pitted against Carlos Condit to battle for the interim welterweight title.
Condit was slated to fight Josh Koscheck at the event, but has been pulled from the bout to face Diaz. After dropping a close decision to Martin Kampmann in his UFC debut, the WEC's last reigning welterweight champ rattled off four straight victories, over Jake Ellenberger, Rory MacDonald, Dan Hardy and Dong Hyun Kim - the last three by TKO.
Nick Diaz vacated his Strikeforce welterweight title to try his hand in the UFC and, after getting off to a rough start by losing his title shot to GSP, Diaz got back on the horse in a big way, putting a beating on BJ Penn the likes of which hadn't been seen before. Diaz is currently riding an eleven-fight winning streak.
UFC 143: Condit vs. Diaz will go down on February 4 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
