Despite Briliant Victory, Nick Diaz Unhappy With Performance Over Penn
By Mark Wayne | October 30, 2011
Polarizing fighter Nick Diaz put on what could have been the best fight of his career last night, dominating the ever-talented BJ Penn en route to a unanimous decision victory. After surviving a tough first round that saw him get bloodied and battered by the Hawaiian warrior, Diaz took the fight to Penn and chipped away at his conditioning and spirit with a constant barrage of punches to the body and head. It was all The Prodigy could do to keep standing in the face of Diaz's assault and, though he came back in the fight during the third round and threw some effective offense back Diaz's way, the fight clearly belonged to Diaz, who knocked down UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre's door with the victory.
However, the angsty Diaz revealed at the post-fight press conference his disappointment with his performance and his frustration over the training camp he was able to put together. The 28-year-old explained that he had difficulty finding sparring partners for this fight and would likely not have gotten busted up as bad as he did had he been able to put in the kind of work that he usually does.
"I thought I put on a poor performance," said Diaz. "I didn't fight a smart fight. I'm not happy with my performance at all. I wasn't one hundred percent today. I felt good, but just leading up to this fight I went through a lot of hard times. Just really had to push through this one. I got good people that I train with that are behind me, that's the reason why I stuck through. I don't give up, that's why I'm still here."
