What Will It Take To Beat Jon Jones? 'UFC Live 6' Fighters Give Their Two Cents
By Mark Wayne | September 26, 2011
Jon Jones put on a clinic last Saturday night against one of the most well-respected veterans in the sport, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. The 24-year-old champ kept his belt by thoroughly out-classing Jackson in just about every area of the game before finally submitting him in the fourth round. With that victory, it became clear (if it wasn't already) that Jones is a very special talent that has the potential to rule over the light heavyweight division for years to come. But, this is MMA and everyone has to lose eventually, right? Right?
It's starting to seem very unlikely that it could happen to Jones, but the fighters competing in the main and co-main events of this weekend's UFC Live: Cruz vs. Johnson fight card today gave their two cents in regards to what it might take to dethrone Bones anyway.
Pat Barry: "Jon Jones has the Mike Tyson effect, same as Anderson Silva. Both of those guys are going to lose eventually. It has to happen, everybody's gotta lose. What has to happen, is someone has to get in the ring not afraid of them."
Stefan Struve: "I think if you have someone who's not afraid to strike with him and not afraid to end up on his back - a really good jiu-jitsu guy maybe - I think that may be the key to beat him. Maybe someone with great leg locks, he's got long legs."
Dominick Cruz: "I think Jon Jones is showing what you need to have to be a dominant champion, to be honest. He's keeping people guessing from round one to round five. … The only way to beat Jon Jones, in my opinion, is to put him on his back. You have to be able to put him on his back… if you don't put that guy on his back, he gets a good rhythm and he gets good comfort on his feet and he uses his reach so well that you can't really keep him off balance."
Demetrious Johnson: "I think it's his time, I think it's his era. I don't see anybody beating (him) in a very long time."
UFC Live: Cruz vs. Johnson goes down on Saturday night from the Verizon Center in Washington D.C.
