Though Matt Hughes Remains Unsure, Dana White Sees Him Retiring

UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes may have seen the inside of the Octagon for the final time as a competitor last night in Denver, Colorado. Hughes took on top welterweight Josh Koscheck and, though he found surprising success early on, was eventually caught and hurt with a punch, leading to the fight's end via ground and pound. The loss is Hughes' second in a row via first-round knockout and, with rumblings of retirement surrounding the former longtime champ for his past few outings, it looks like this may have been his last hurrah - even though he left the door open for a return.
"I'm not retiring," Hughes told Joe Rogan post-fight. "I'm going to tell the UFC to put me up on the shelf and we'll see what happens after that."
UFC president Dana White is a little more decisive in regards to the Country Boy's future, telling media last night that he believes this was Hughes' last fight, whether the 37-year-old is willing to come to terms with it yet or not.
"I think he's gonna retire. I just don't think Hughes wants to say the word 'retire,' is what I think," said White. "There was a lot of talk that this was the last fight on his contract, I don't know if that's true or not because he's a guy I've never worried about last fights or whatever. I just talked to him out in the hallway too, and he's gonna fly out to Vegas in the next month or so and sit down and talk. But, I'm pretty sure he's going to hang it up."
Hughes met Koscheck at UFC 135, which went down last night at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado.
