MMAWeekly.com is reporting that top UFC lightweight contenders Clay Guida and Ben Henderson have agreed to face off at the impending UFC On FOX 1 fight card. The bout, which has been rumored for some time, will go a long way in determining the next contender to the UFC lightweight throne.
After blazing a trail through the WEC's lightweight division and eventually capturing that promotion's lightweight title, Henderson met Anthony Pettis in the cage in the final fight on the WEC's final card. It was a barnburner, as are most of Henderson's fights, but it ended in Pettis' favor, who sealed the deal with the now-famous Showtime Kick. Rather than let that defeat sink him, Henderson used it as motivation to make a splash in the UFC once they had collapsed and absorbed the WEC. In two fights with the promotion, Henderson has taken out both Mark Bocek and, most recently, former top contender Jim Miller in a surprise upset. A victory over Guida would make it difficult to deny Smooth a shot at the belt.
A longtime staple at 155lbs., Clay "The Carpenter" Guida has seemingly broken his streak of inconsistency, having strung together four consecutive victories in the promotion for the first time in his career. 9-5 in the UFC, the rapid fire Illinois native looks to have hit his stride; he's taken out Shannon Gugerty, Rafael dos Anjos, Takanori Gomi and, most recently, Anthony Pettis. A member of the crew at Greg Jackson's in Albuquerque, Guida has never been involved in a forgettable fight during his UFC tenure, but his recent winning ways have him at the forefront of the lightweight contenders discussion.
UFC On FOX 1 is set to take place on November 12 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California and will feature a main event between UFC heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez and challenger Junior dos Santos.
