By Mark Wayne | September 02, 2011
The UFC today held a conference call in order to announce the fight card for their impending network TV debut on FOX, which is to come on November 12. Here are quick notes and quotes from the call.
On the call:
-UFC press contact Dave Sholler
-FOX Sports media president Eric Shanks
-FOX Sports Chief Executive David Hill
-UFC president Dana White
-UFC heavyweight title fight between Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos will main event UFC's FOX debut.
-The UFC wants to deliver and kick off network debut with a bang.
-"No card is ever announced until I announce it." - Dana White
-UFC 139 in San Jose will go on.
-One hour with a five-round championship fight, no other fights will be on the card.
-Both guys are very excited to fight on FOX, White believes it will be a supremely exciting fight and repeatedly calls the UFC heavyweight title "the most prestigious title in combat sports."
-Tickets for FOX show go on sale next Friday, for the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
-"Having a free fight on FOX leading into a pay-per-view next week sure doesn't suck." - Dana White.
-Still negotiating where the fight will be shown in the UK, but it will be shown. "We're going to get the whole UK/Ireland piece of this thing fixed." - White.
-They are still working out how to handle things if the fight runs short. "We'll fill out the rest of the night with a full replay of a fight or a 'best of the night' special." - Eric Shanks.
-"It took literally 3.5 minutes to get both deals done … They're honored, they're pumped." - White on convincing Velasquez and dos Santos to get off pay-per-view and on FOX.
-Launching the UFC on FOX with "red carpet tailgate" party á la the Super Bowl.
-"This is gonna be the event of all events." - White.
-Fight will likely air on Rogers Sportsnet in Canada.
-"We announced the deal, three hours later, if that, they were already promoting the UFC in the NFL. This deal doesn't start until January. We've never been treated like this, we've never been happier," said White on current relationship with FOX.
-Promos will begin airing for the fight tomorrow during all of FOX's sports and entertainment property broadcasts.
-"That's ridiculous. It's so far from the truth it's not even funny. He's one hundred percent. He was working on a farm in Canada all summer. His surgery went great, he's one hundred percent. He's getting back to training in a couple of weeks." - White on Brock Lesnar retirement rumors.
-White calls this Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar all over again. He's betting everything that Velasquez and dos Santos will deliver.
