The decision was mulled over, but middleweight veteran Jorge Rivera will not be following Matt Hamill into retirement. Both men competed over the weekend at UFC 133: Evans vs. Ortiz 2 and both took home their second straight defeats. With his heart not in it anymore, Hamill decided to walk away from the sport of MMA, but MMAJunkie.com has revealed that Rivera will be sticking around.
The 39-year-old was beaten by Cypriot Constantinos Philippou via split decision in what was a very close three-rounder. Rivera has now become Philippou's lone Octagon win (the Matt Serra-trained 185-pounder is 1-1 in the promotion, having lost to Nick Catone in his debut) and sees himself on a two-fight losing streak.
El Conquistador was beaten controversially by Michael Bisping this past February and at times during his UFC 133 scrap looked as if he'd rather not be in the cage fighting at all. Regardless, the longtime MMA veteran has plans to return to the Octagon at least once more.
Rivera has gone back and forth throughout his career and has squared off against some of the sport's best, including Anderson Silva, Chris Leben, Rich Franklin, Martin Kampmann and Dennis Hallman, to name just a few. He had put together a three-fight winning streak in the UFC before running into Bisping.
UFC 133 went down at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
