Dana White Proclaims Anderson Silva 'The Greatest Ever... Period'
By Raj Giri | June 17, 2011
UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva will look to extend his records for most consecutive title defenses (currently at 8) and most consecutive victories in the UFC (13) when he faces the last man to have defeated him (albeit by disqualification), Japanese powerhouse Yushin Okami, this August.Despite the outcome of his impending title defense, Silva's legacy in the sport has been sealed. The long list of achievements held by "The Spider" led to UFC President Dana White declaring him the "greated mixed martial artist ever" at yesterday's UFC Rio press conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
"He hasn't lost a fight in five years," White said (props to MMAFighting.com for the transcription). "He's never lost in the UFC. The last time he lost was to Yushin Okami in October 2006. He's got the most title defenses ever, with eight. He's got the longest [UFC] win streak ever, at 13-0. And in my opinion, he's the greatest mixed martial artist ever. Ever, period."
Silva will face Okami at UFC Rio on August 27th from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The two first met at Rumble on the Rock 8 in 2006, where Silva was disqualified after knocking out Okami with an illegal up-kick. You can watch their first fight by clicking here.
