The Ultimate Fighter season 5 winner Nate Diaz has proven that he possesses the potential to be a threat to most anyone on a given night, but his loss over the weekend to Rory MacDonald proved that his best chances at doing so are in the lightweight division. The four-time Fight of the Night winner and two-time Submission of the Night winner was thoroughly manhandled by MacDonald in a fight that looked similar to Diaz's most recent prior bout against Dong Hyun Kim, where he was out-muscled by a larger, stronger opponent.
As a result of his seeming size disadvantage at 170lbs. (Diaz's current record in the division sits at 2-2), Diaz's coach, Cesar Gracie, recently told MMAMania.com that a move back to the lightweight division is likely in store for the younger of the fighting Diaz brothers.
"Nate Diaz didn't look too good. I'm gonna be the first one to say it," said Gracie. "He looked lethargic out there and he's been asking me to go back to 155 for some time now. Frankie Edgar is the champion over there and he's the student of a good friend of mine. Nathan was one of the contenders at 155 so we brought him up to 170 but it looks like we'll probably bring him back down to 155 where he belongs."
Diaz's last appearance in the lightweight division came at UFC Fight Night 20 in January of 2010, where he lost a close and controversial decision to current number one contender Gray Maynard.
