According to Heavy.com, a long-rumored lightweight match up between Kenny Florian and Evan Dunham has been made and will serve as the main event for the second UFC Fight for the Troops event. Both fighters are considered to be among the best 155'ers in the UFC and both will be coming off of losses when they meet.Kenny Florian has twice challenged for UFC lightweight gold, falling up short on both occasions (against Sean Sherk in 2006 and BJ Penn in 2009). He seemed to be well on his way to a third shot after racking up impressive wins over Clay Guida and Takanori Gomi but was derailed from that path by current number one contender Gray Maynard, who stifled Florian over three rounds this past August to earn a unanimous decision win. The 34-year old will be gearing up to claw his way back to that elusive title when he takes on Dunham.
Touted as one of the brightest prospects in the division, Evan Dunham recently had his ten-fight unbeaten streak broken by a very controversial split decision loss to former lightweight champ Sean Sherk at UFC 119 late this past September. Dunham stayed positive in defeat, even though most in the MMA community thought Dunham to have beaten Sherk. He will look to improve his overall record to 12-1 against Florian, an opponent that will test his abilities as much, if not more than, they ever have been.
UFC Fight for the Troops 2 is expected to go down this January 22nd from the military base at Fort Hood, in Killeen, Texas.
