Georges St-Pierre Vs. Anderson Silva Not Likely To Happen Anytime Soon
By Raj Giri | July 30, 2010
One of the saddest things to come in the wake of UFC 112 was the apparent indefinite postponement of a tantalizingly close superfight between UFC Welterweight and Middleweight Champions Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva, respectively. So close was the fight that the UFC's color-commentary team made mention of the bout several times and even went so far as to declare that if Silva were to beat his opponent, Demian Maia, that he would be fighting St. Pierre at welterweight.Beat Maia he did, but Silva's off-the-wall performance so angered UFC President Dana White that he told press that the bout was unlikely to ever happen. Since then, White has cooled off a bit on his stance, however noted on this week's episode of MMA Live that it would not be happening anytime soon.
"Everybody keeps asking me about that fight," White noted. "But realistically for Georges St-Pierre, Georges St-Pierre has some work ahead of him. Thiago Alves and [Jon] Fitch are going to fight, we just got Jake Shields into the UFC at 170 lbs. He's got to fight Josh Koscheck. He's still got a lot of tough fights before he cleans out the 170 lb. division and then we start talking about a possible fight with Anderson Silva."
Despite White's hesitation, a fight between St. Pierre and Silva would be a huge draw and is an incredibly interesting prospect; widely considered to be two of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world, watching the two fight would be exhilarating for MMA fans and has the potential to be one of the most important fights in MMA history.
