Steve Mazzagatti Defends Disqualifying Jon Jones

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is consider one of the best fighters on the planet. The only blemish on his record came from Matt Hamill due to illegal 12-to-6 elbows, which caused the disqualification. The referee, Steve Mazzagatti, took heat for the call.

??He got hit with three of them straight to the bridge of his nose and when I went back and looked at the instant replay, in the first round his nose is cut open,? said Mazzagatti to MMA Fighting. ??So he’s supposed to go out and fight two more rounds with the bridge of his nose cut open, bleeding into both eyes in the first round and be able to compete??

It??s not the first time Mazzagatti has come under scrutiny. UFC president Dana White has been vocal against his refereeing skills.

In the World Series of Fighting 3 main event, Mazzagatti was considered out of place when Josh Burkman choked Jon Fitch unconscious. It was Burkman who released the hold after feeling Fitch go limp.
