Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza made his UFC debut with lots riding on his performance. Coming directly from Strikeforce, Souza needed to prove he belonged in the UFC and the pending arrival of his second child increased his efforts.
“That weekend was creepy to me,” said Souza to TATAME. “I learned of the birth of my son shortly after weighing, which was a great emotion. I was sad to be away, but at the same time I knew I had to work just to ensure his future. It was a mixture of emotions.”
It was a joyous occasion as Souza’s wife gave birth and the former Strikeforce middleweight champion made his first UFC outing a quick one. He captured Submission of the Night for his arm triangle choke on Chris Camozzi.
The two fought at UFC on FX 8, which was in January of this year. Souza returns next month against Yushin Okami at UFC Fight Night 28. They serve as the co-main event of the September 4 card from Brazil’s Mineirinho Arena.
