Michael Johnson spoiled Joe Lauzon’s return to Boston at UFC Fight Night 26. While Johnson thought about going for the finish, he wanted to put on a 15 minute performance to remove any doubters.
“I wanted to finish him, but I didn’t want to finish him early,” said Johnson on MMA Junkie Radio. “I’m really glad the fight went the way it did. I would have rather finished him in the third, but if I would have knocked him out in the first round, you would have had the critics saying, ‘He got lucky. He threw a lucky punch.’”
The two opened the main card with two judges scoring it 30-27 and one 30-25. It snapped Johnson’s two fighting losing skid and he’s 5-4 for the UFC.
Lauzon was returning off his Fight of the Year defeat to Jim Miller back at December’s UFC 155. He’s 1-4 since last year.
UFC Fight Night 26 was August 17 from the TD Garden and aired on the new FOX Sports 1 channel.
