Chael Sonnen pulled off a guillotine choke as the first round started to tick away Saturday night, defeating former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Sonnen.
With the win, Sonnen earned his first victory over a former or standing UFC champion in five tries. He also snapped a two-fight losing skid and made sure to call out long-time nemesis Wanderlei Silva.
“Right here, on the UFC’s new home, FOX Sports 1,” Sonnen said. “Wanderlei Silva, 6-feet tall, 205 pounds; boy, until I met you, I didn’t know they could stack crap that high.”
After being almost interrupted by Joe Rogan, Sonnen took back the microphone and said, “Wanderlei Silva, three months, you and the bad guy,” and walked off with his new bride.
Sonnen earned his fifth career submission victory and first since a win over Brian Stann in 2011. He took Rua down just seconds into the bout and dedicated the win to “everybody who has had to go through cancer, this is for you.”
