Two of Bellator’s more known names could be headed somewhere else. Their welterweight champion Ben Askren is a free agent since completing his contract and former UFC title contender Paul Daley was released. UFC president Dana White is interested in one of the two welterweights.
“We’ll talk to Ben,” said White at the UFC Fight Night 26 press conference. “Yeah, we’ll talk to him.”
Askren is a four time collegiate All-American wrestler who is undefeated in MMA with 12 wins. Nine of those fights have come for Bellator with four being title defenses. This year, Askren stopped Karl Amoussou and Andrey Koreshkov.
Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney said he’s communicating with Askren about a new deal.
Daley was banned from the UFC after a suckerpunch to Josh Koscheck at UFC 113. He was released by Bellator due to visa issues from a bar fight in December of 2012. He’s 6-1 as of late, with three finishes this year.
“He was only guy that’s ever done that in the history of the UFC,” said White. “I’m not saying that he couldn’t be forgiven and it couldn’t change, but he’d have to win some fights and – I don’t know what he’d have to do.”
