Bellator promised a card full of championships as they enter the PPV market for the first time. Light heavyweight champion Attila Vegh has a shoulder injury and is out long enough that Bellator will create an interim title.
Season 8 tournament winner Emanuel Newton will take on the 2013 Summer Series winner Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal. It’s a rematch from February’s Bellator 90, where Newton shocked everyone by knocking Lawal out cold with a spinning back fist.
“The energy in the arena when Newton dropped ‘Mo’ with that spinning back fist was simply awesome,” said Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney. “To be able to have this rematch take place on our first pay-per-view is something we couldn’t pass up. With ‘Mo’ and Emanuel winning our previous two light heavyweight tournaments, the timing was perfect for this rematch to add another incredibly intriguing storyline to this huge night of fights.”
Lawal, a former Strikeforce champion, stopped Seth Petruzelli and Jacob Noe to win the Summer Series. It was his second chance in a Bellator tournament.
Newton had two finishes before taking a decision win in the finals to win the tournament. He’s a former champion of Canada’s MFC.
They are one of several title fights for Bellator 106, which is November 2. It’s from the Convention and Entertainment Center in Long Beach, CA. Headlining is Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Tito Ortiz and a lightweight championship rematch co-main event, as Michael Chandler takes on Eddie Alvarez.
