Former UFC title contender Chael Sonnen cleared up his reasons for making a return to middleweight after his fight with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at 205 pounds this weekend at UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Sonnen.
Sonnen, a two-time contender for the 185-pound title, made it clear he is headed back to the division after this second bout at light heavyweight.
“I am chasing after two guys: Vitor (Belfort) and Wanderlei (Silva),” Sonnen said. “Wanderlei had mentioned right before I made that decision that he was going back to 185; there wasn’t a whole lot of motivation other than that.”
Earlier this year, Sonnen was defeated by Jon Jones for the UFC light heavyweight title. He has previously lost to Anderson Silva twice for the middleweight championship.
