Once Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman have their rematch, the middleweight division will need a new contender for the belt. Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza thinks Vitor Belfort has done enough this year to deserve another middleweight title shot.
“I believe Vitor showed, after his last two fights that he should fight for the title,” said Souza to MMA Fighting. “He destroyed everybody and is the next contender. But it’s up to the UFC, I’d accept that fight.”
So far this year, Belfort has stopped Michael Bisping and Luke Rockhold. He failed to beat Silva for the belt in 2011.
Souza joined the UFC once Strikeforce ceased operations in January. The former Strikeforce middleweight champion got Submission of the Night over Chris Camozzi in his debut. He used an arm triangle choke in the first round to go 18-3.
At UFC Fight Night 28, Souza takes on Yushin Okami. It’s September 4 from Brazil’s Mineirinho Arena and serves as the co-main event.
