Bjorn Rebney Sounds Confident Ben Askren Will Resign With Bellator

Ben Askren remains the Bellator welterweight champion, but he needs a new contract. Askren completed his deal with a win at Bellator 97.

Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney said they have a standard exclusive negotiating period with Askren and the two sides are talking.

“Ben’s last fight for us was his fight against [Andrey] Koreshkov,” said Rebney on MMA Junkie Radio. “At this point, we’re having communications with Ben and we’ll see how it goes. It’ll probably just happen naturally. We’ll see. Ben and I have always had a pretty open line of communication. I like Ben.”

Askren defeated Koreshkov to remain undefeated with nine Bellator wins. He’s defended the belt four times, a record for the promotion.

Bellator has run into issues when renewing contracts. They’re still dealing with former lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez. There’s no update on those two parties.
